Rebuild Connecticut: A Fair Economy for All
Restoring Opportunity for Working and Middle Class Families
Council 400 Leader Tom Corrigan Called Corporate Tax Cheats "Un-American" at a Protest Outside a West Hartford Bank of America Branch in April
Three years after Wall Street wrecked our economy, 25 million people still can't find full-time work and the gap between the richest 1% and the 99% is wider than ever. But instead of creating jobs, Congress is ignoring the needs of the 99%, and is instead pushing job-killing cuts and tax giveaways for the rich.
In 2011, we are taking action to realize a vision for a better future and build a strong defense for a stepped-up assault by the corporate special interests resisting change. But winning in this economic and political climate takes more than good policy ideas or elected officials who share our values. It takes members of our unions acting on behalf of all workers and their families.
That means advocating for good jobs with decent wages, a 21st century education for our children, and reinvesting in our state's crumbling infrastructure. It also means taking action to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and preserve the high-quality services we deliver.
But progress on these core values won't happen until big banks, Wall Street, and the superrich are held accountable for wrecking the nation's economy.
That's why members of our unions have teamed up with an alliance of religious, community, and labor organizations to demand that corporations start paying their fair share. Join us in Hartford on November 17 as we declare an "economic emergency" and step up our direct action efforts. We will march from Aetna's headquarters to the Broad Street entrance to I-84 to send a loud message to the powers-that-be: we need good jobs, not painful cuts.
