Public and Private Sector Union Members Must Hang Together

For the first time in American history, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in January that there are more public sector union members than in the private sector. This news should energize our members to help make it easier for private sector workers to unionize because public sector union families are even more at risk when there are fewer private sector workers who enjoy similar compensation and benefits.

Boosting Support this "McCusker Month" for Our Scholarship Benefit

Our Union's McCusker Scholarship Trustees are stepping-up efforts to set a new record for the number of members' children and grandchildren to receive educational grants in 2010. In addition to appealing to our Union's Councils, Chapters, and individual members to contribute during our annual "McCusker Month" drive, they have teamed-up once again with Lyman Orchards to organize a pastry fundraiser through March 12.

Debating Employee Free Choice with the CBIA

As the 2008 presidential election has heated up, news reports of nationwide efforts to pass the most sweeping labor law reforms in a generation are gaining attention. WTIC-AM radio invited our union to represent the pro-worker side of the debate over the proposed Employee Free Choice Act, and Local union President Mike O'Brien delivered our message live today on the "Mornings with Ray & Diane" show.

Seeking Solutions for the State Budget Deficit

Monday's news reporting a larger deficit for the current year's state budget than the Rell Administration projected last week was not a huge surprise, given the nosedive the nation's economy has taken. What was surprising was the Governor's warning that "everything will be on the table" to an Associated Press reporter who asked if she is considering deeper cuts to services, laying-off state workers, or reducing aid to cities and towns. NBC-TV Channel 30 reached out to our members for a response, and aired comments in last night's 6:00 news broadcast by our union's President Mike O'Brien and Secretary-Treasurer Patrice Peterson.

Taking Back Labor Day from the Special Interests

Our union's President Mike O'Brien has an Op-Ed on the Employee Free Choice Act, connecting it to the November General Election and increasing attacks by opponents of workers' rights, published in today's Hartford Business Journal. He responded to an editorial published in last week's edition opposing the legislation, which when passed will help more workers achieve the American Dream by giving them the freedom to choose a union.

We Won't be the Special Interests' Scapegoats

Yesterday's Willimantic Chronicle printed our response to an Op-Ed the paper published last month by a policy analyst from Connecticut's increasingly visible anti-union network. Paraprofessional Council leader Sharon Hagans' "Community Voices" editorial is the latest in our ongoing efforts to expose the real agenda of supply-side extremists who are manipulating economic fears to achieve the political goals of the special interests who back them.

Responding to Reckless, Radical Rhetoric

The Yankee Institute (YI), a corporate-funded anti-worker think tank, has been on a 6-week press junket hawking its latest "study," The Coming Showdown with Public Labor. When the report's author, YI Executive Director Lewis Andrews, wrote an Op-Ed published in the Journal Inquirer regurgitating its special interest-driven political agenda, we responded. Read CSC Council Vice-President Mark Lucey's reply, published yesterday as a Letter to the Editor of the JI (scroll down for the fourth letter on the page).
