Our call for calm, steady leadership from Hartford's elected officials is being heard! WFSB-TV Channel 3 interviewed Chapter 848 member David Shoff for a
news segment broadcast after he testified at Wednesday's City Council meeting on his recent lay-off. And today's Hartford Courant
published our response, written by Chapter President Liz Kavanah and AFSCME Council 4's Chapter President, to a
misleading letter by the Mayor's spokesperson published last week implying public service workers have not shown a commitment to weather the current storm.
Video of the news segment featuring Dave's remarks is available online at the WFSB website. The
full text of the published letter Liz co-authored with Clarke King, the President of
AFSCME Council 4's Local 1716, which also represents Hartford's rank-and-file workforce, is linked to our website's "Press Center," too.
Dave, Liz, and Clarke were joined by dozens of public service workers from
both our unions at Wednesday's City Council meeting to urge elected officials to
stop cutting public services in response to Hartford's current budget deficit. Specifically,
Liz testified in support of a resolution suspending further lay-offs, and
Dave testified to response to reckless decisions that threaten public health, safety, and quality of life for residents and businesses.
The resolution we called on City Council members to pass was
tabled without action until their next meeting on Monday, November 24...which means members living in the City should
contact their Council member at (860) 543-8510 on Monday -- again -- and urge them to support Councilman Segarra's "Suspension of Layoffs" resolution...
Tell your Council member that as a public service worker, you have seen Hartford in good times, as well as bad. Tell them you have seen effective leaders manage economic crises in the past by keeping their heads and not panicking...
Tell them the current approach has been quite the opposite. Tell them the Mayor's answer -- cutting public services like the City is having some sort of fire sale -- is not the kind of leadership we need right now!
