Our members who serve the meals to students in Windham public schools gathered hundreds of additional
signatures for our petition opposing the Superintendent's scheme to contract-out food services at Saturday's
"Boom Box Parade" in Willimantic. The annual event provided the opportunity to build additional support in advance of
Wednesday's Board of Education meeting, where we will deliver the signatures we've gathered since first learning of the outsourcing proposal three months ago.
Members of Council 760's Chapter I67, which represents the food service professionals in Windham's six schools, are mobilizing to speak out against the proposal to
contract-out cafeteria services to a private, for-profit food service company during the public comment portion of the meeting. This will be the third time our members have publicly called on the Board to drop the idea of balancing their budget at the expense of the health and well being of our community's children since March.
Our members are also reaching out to their co-workers in the schools -- teachers, paraprofessionals, support personnel, and even administrators -- to join them at Wednesday's meeting. We invited parents and residents as we handed-out
community support leaflets and asked for signatures on our petition at Saturday's parade, as well.
Take a moment to check out a
few pictures from Saturday's parade, and see our members in action.
But don't wait until Wednesday to make your voice heard. Members and Town residents should
contact each member of the Board now and demand that they keep Windham food services local -- and withdraw any contracting-out proposal -- before the Executive Session they are holding before the public meeting convenes at 7:30 PM:
