Our Organizing - Bus Drivers

SE Aides MonitorsMembers of our Southeast Chapter Working as School Bus Drivers and Monitors for Laidlaw in the New London, East Lyme, and Waterford School Districts

SEIU and the Transport and General Workers Union in the United Kingdom kicked off a transatlantic partnership to hold global bus companies accountable to employees and consumers in both countries. First Student, the U.S. subsidiary of U.K.-based bus and rail giant FirstGroup, is now the second-largest private provider of school bus transportation services in the United States. FirstGroup's U.S. and U.K. operations are engaged in a race to the bottom, driving down industry standards for wages, benefits, and safety.

Our goal is to organize our bus drivers for maximum strength and unity, because we believe it is essential for workers in public school transport to gain a greater voice on the job. We see this opportunity to drive up standards in the student transportation industry as critical to the safety and welfare of our public school children.

Our CSEA/SEIU Local 2001 members working in bus yards across Connecticut work for local schools as well as for private companies contracted by Boards of Education to provide transportation for their students. These diverse groups of workers are committed to safe, reliable services for our state's public school children and their families.
