LAID-OFF PUBLIC SERVICE WORKERS TO TESTIFY AT HARTFORD CITY COUNCIL MEETING

Wednesday, November 12, 2008

Workers and their Unions will Support Resolution Suspending Layoffs
Laid-off Harford city workers Dora Hall, Ellen Nurse and David Shoff will be among those testifying before the Hartford City Council’s regular meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber, 550 Main St., Hartford, CT.

Hall and Nurse are members of Local 1716 of Council 4 AFSCME and Shoff is a member of CSEA/SEIU Local 2001. Along with their local union presidents, Clarke King and Elizabeth Kavanah, the workers will urge City Council members to support a resolution, sponsored by Councilman Pedro Segarra, calling for the suspension of further layoffs.

"What we don't need is for city leaders to manage this economic crisis from a bunker,” Kavanah and King said in a joint statement. “If Mayor Perez engaged us on developing long-term solutions for delivering the quality services residents count on when it was clear the City was facing a deficit, perhaps we could have prevented reckless cuts.”

Kavanah, King, Hall, Nurse and Shoff will all be available for additional media comment prior to, and during, the Council meeting.
