The Day obtained a draft copy of a University of Connecticut study that evaluates ways to make Connecticut's bureaucracy more efficient. ("Study finds big savings in state budget," March 30.) Many of its recommendations have been heralded by public service workers for years.
More than a year ago I began campaigning for state workers to lead the way in telecommuting. Gas prices were the highest ever and global warming was on everyone's mind. Now the state faces its worst budget deficit in history. What are we waiting for?
Telecommuting saves money in fuel, vehicle maintenance cost and productivity. Telecommuting removes vehicles from congested roadways and reduces greenhouse gases. Telecommuting also improves employee morale and reduces medical leave.
The UConn study took the example of one monthly meeting at the Department of Social Services, attended by 37 people, and found that by telecommuting they could achieve a savings of $8,700 and 354 hours travel. Think of what could be achieved over the entire state system.
I encourage Gov. M. Jodi Rell and the legislature to listen to the innovative ideas of public service workers. Together we can increase productivity, help the environment and achieve savings for Connecticut.
